We then supplement the lessons with readily available online materials, like supplemental videos and songs, that they can interact with throughout the week. The end result is a lesson program that preschoolers love, and your child will learn the piano quickly since they will be inspired to practice at home.

Piano Lessons For Kids in Grade School

Williamsburg Music Studio offers small group piano classes for children at our Brooklyn location. Our lessons are fun and engaging, and we know your child will love the program.

Specifically, we use the Piano Express program in our school. Students will learn the fundamentals of music, like note reading, rhythm, and theory, as they progress through different age-appropriate pieces of music. Your child will have individual time with their teacher each week, so their progress will be carefully monitored. They will also receive personalized help when they hit a roadblock.

Perhaps most importantly, your child will be able to “pass” pieces as soon as they have mastered them. They don’t have to wait for their peers if they are learning quickly, but if a particular piece is taking some time, they won’t feel rushed either.

The Piano Express learning system also comes with an app that our students use to learn. These piano lessons are fun, as with a video game, students can “beat” levels as they learn new concepts.

Piano Lessons For Adults in Brooklyn, NY

Our piano lessons for adults are catered to the student’s goals. Some of our students are busy working professionals, and others are retired individuals; whatever the case may be, we want to know what you want to get out of piano lessons.

Have you always wanted to sight read? That’s a fantastic goal, and we can help bring your reading up to speed. What about improvising or playing songs by ear? We can help you train your ear and learn chords and other theory fundamentals that will allow you to do just that.

You can also tell us specific composers or musicians you want to work on. Many adults have always wanted to play Chopin, but their technique or reading skills aren’t quite up to par. We can help with that. Or perhaps you want to play Billy Joel tunes on the piano with friends – let us know.

Whether you want to learn concertos or play from lead sheets, contact us about individual adult piano lessons in Brooklyn.

Fun Group Piano Classes in Brooklyn

A note from WMS Owner, Melanie:

When I was a child I started learning violin in a group, and I loved it so much. I was moving through my music books quickly, I was excited to practice at home, and I could not wait to go to class and share what I’d accomplished on my own.

I was taking private piano lessons at that time, and my piano practice did not receive the same attention at all. I should also mention here that my mother is a pianist! I had someone who knew what they were doing at home with me every day to encourage me, and my interest in the instrument was minimal until I was much older…

When I learned about the Piano Express program, my first thought was, “If this had been around when I was a kid, I would have been so excited about the piano!!”

In this class, students are:

  • Moving through beginning piano much faster than they would using traditional methods.
  • Learning music in a fun, low stress way. It is exactly like a game!
  • Learning at their own pace. Students have one on one time with their teacher each week and move up in level when they are ready.
  • Enjoying their practice at home – the app makes it fun!

What you get from the class:

  • Just like a video game, students are scored and can “pass off” a song either at home or in class.
  • Supplemental videos and tools that support and guide playing the piano at home
  • The opportunity to work on your own and play with a group in every single class
  • Small class sizes
  • Low-pressure, optional recitals
  • After school pickup from PS84

Not sure if group piano class will be a good fit for your child? Try one class with no commitment!

Piano Lessons Online – You Don’t Have To Be in Brooklyn

Students who are brand new are loving their lessons.

Firstly, a quick student example:

Paxton decided to switch from singing to piano while online, and his mom worried he would not have the same enthusiasm without the foundation of in-person lessons. That ended up not being the case at all.

He was successfully playing a song from Star Wars within a month, and he is performing at our upcoming recital!

In our piano lessons (online and in person), students are:

  • Practicing  – Sometimes even more!
  • Progressing – Our students continue to succeed with their milestones.
  • Supported – We are here to answer questions throughout the week, whether they are technical or musical.

What is Included In Our Piano Teaching Curriculum?

Our goal is to help our students learn music, not just the piano. So you will learn how to read music, count in various time signatures, identify major and minor keys, hear the difference between intervals (like a major and minor third), and more.

Furthermore, we will teach you how to practice the piano. Your lessons are incredibly important, but the truth of the matter is that we only get to see you once per week! Most of the progress is done at home in your practice sessions. Your teacher will show you what to work on, check on your progress each week, and assign specific tasks. Over time, you will become a confident and fluent pianist. Your teacher will assign different things for you to work on: a piece of music broken into sections, drills for learning notes or other fundamentals, and technical exercises to give you confidence playing with speed and accuracy.

Music theory will always be part of our piano lessons. We want you to be able to recognize chords and inversions firstly, and this will enable you to improvise and recognize patterns in your music. We will teach you all of the minor and major keys, and you’ll learn how to recognize accidents (both sharps and flats). We will also teach you to analyze your music over time – the main them, development sections, key changes, and more.

Rhythm is another important aspect of music training. You’ll identify eighth, quarter, whole, and other notes, and you will learn how to read and understand time signatures (4/4, 3/4, 6/8, etc.). We will also practice maintaining a steady beat so you can play effectively with others.

Your technique is also very important to us. We will work any tension or wrist stiffness out of your playing, and we will introduce you to scale and arpeggio study to increase your finger dexterity. Tone productions also comes into play here by using arm weight correctly.

We will also help you learn how to compose music if that is of interest to you. Music theory study will make this possible, but we’ll help you train your ability to hear a tune in your head, put it on paper, and fill out an accompaniment.

Lessons To Support All Musical Genres

Piano students at our studio go on to perform classical music, jazz, rock, pop, and everything in between. As mentioned above, you will learn fundamentals that will allow to pursue any genre.

If you want to write songs and compose in the future, we can help you by focusing more on structure and music theory, and we will always support you while you create tunes and learn how to fill them out with chords, accompaniments, and more.

If you’d like to develop into a jazz pianist, we can help you learn modes and beyond. You will need to know your blues scales, chords, music theory, and develop a great ear – if this is your goal, we can create a unique learning plan for you.

Most of our students pursue a holistic classical approach to playing the piano. We will teach you how to read and interpret musical scores, and we’ll work with you on how exactly you can pick apart a challenging piece of repertoire and perfect it.

Other Frequently Asked Questions About Our Piano Lessons

Do You Need To Have a Piano At Home?

You don’t need to have a grand piano at home, but if you want to keep improving outside of lessons, you will need to practice on a near-daily basis. So yes, you need a keyboard of some sort available to practice on.

What Kind of Piano Should You Have At Home?

Something with 88 keys (a full keyboard) is best, but if you only have a 61 key keboardd, that will work as well for your first couple of years. Once you get into more advanced music, you will need a full keyboard.

Additionally, if you are looking into digital pianos, look for something with weighted keys and a realistic pedal. You want to mimic the feel of an acoustic piano.

As far as acoustic pianos are concerned, you can improve just as much on an upright piano as a grand piano. You certainly don’t need a Steinway grand to practice at home if it’s not in the budget.

How Long Will It Take You To Learn?

Your progress is entirely up to you! If you practice every day and follow your teacher’s guidance, you will be surprised at how rapidly you can learn.

That said, adult students could be playing advanced repertoire within three years, if the level of practice is high enough. More commonly, adults will be playing intermediate music by the time they reach the three-year mark.

Children will learn their notes in the first year, and they will be playing simple music with hands together by year two.
