my kids have been going here for music lessons for a few years now and we love WMS! the teachers we've had are excellent, group classes are small so kids get lots of 1:1 instruction even when in a group, staff is super kind and helpful, and policies are very reasonable.

My three kids, ages 4, 6 and 8 love Williamsburg Music Studio! My eldest has taken piano and chorus for two years. My 6-year-old has taken piano for two years and my 4-year-old started taking chorus this year. The teachers are all wonderful and my kids have learned so much about music theory in a fun and engaging way. I did music lessons from the age of 5 years old, all the way to high school. Knowing music and playing different instruments helped me develop skills that have served me well my whole life and that’s why it was important to me to find a good music school for my kids. I’m so glad to have found Williamsburg Music Studio! I love that my kids are exposed to different genres of music and that they have had a chance to perform at recitals, which has been a great way for them to experience being in front of an audience. I highly recommend Williamsburg Music Studio to anyone looking to start their musical education journey or a seasoned musician who wants to advance their skills.

Not only have both my kids been taking lessons with Williamsburg Music Studio’s excellent teachers for the past seven year, I have also started taking lessons with my son’s piano teacher two years ago. I have really enjoyed rediscovering playing the piano and learning in such a positive and fun environment. Nicki, my piano teacher, has been so patient with me and let me choose music that I want to learn. I highly recommend taking music lessons at WMS, whether you’re rediscovering your passion for music or just a beginner learning a new instrument.

Our family has been taking piano lessons at WMS for almost ten years. My boys started at a young age when we lived in Williamsburg, and they've continued remotely through the pandemic and our move outside of the city. Nicki is their talented and very patient teacher; he's taught them as distractible little kids and now surly teenagers, keeping them engaged with a mix of classical, jazz, and contemporary pieces - even hip hop. The recitals are casual and low-key, which I think parents and students both appreciate!

My daughter has been getting music lessons at Williamsburg Music Studio for five years. She started taking piano lessons with Melanie when she was four-years-old. Melanie was great! She was patient, kind, but also had a way of keeping in control of the wandering mind of a kid. My daughter has also taken piano lessons with Lyle and drum lessons with Scott. All the music teachers are fantastic. They really know how to work with kids at their own level. I highly recommend music classes for your kids at Williamsburg Music Studio.

My daughter has been taking piano lessons at the Williamsburg Music Studio for 5 years since she was almost 4. She always enjoys going to the lessons with Ms Melanie. During covid, they made the zoom learning fun and she continued her piano learning happily. I also really like how the studio offers low key recitals for kids in a very welcoming setting. It has been fun taking her there and see a lot of local kids enjoying music.

My Daughter has attended lessons at the music school for the last 7 years and has consistently had an excellent experience. She has had kind and caring teachers who not only teach her piano but make the experience fun. She looks forward to her lessons.

At Williamsburg Music Studio, our guitar students learn the music they love, receive a holistic and fundamentally sound music education, and get as much support as they need while learning to practice at home. Learn rock, jazz, blues, classical music, and more, and start playing along with your own customized backing tracks!

The teaching staff at Williamsburg Music Studio is highly educated and accomplished. Our teachers have music degrees from some of the most prestigious music programs in the country, have performed professionally in NYC and abroad, and have taught lessons at a high level for years.

Guitar Lessons For Kids in Brooklyn

Children aged 5-7 take lessons on correctly-sized Loog guitars at our music studio. These are closer to the feel of real guitar than a ukulele, but they still fit your child’s reach comfortably.

Your child can learn in a fun classroom environment, one-on-one with an instructor, or in an online medium where lessons can happen anywhere.

What Your Child Can Learn

Our young students learn how to play tunes and chords on their guitar right from the beginning (along with backing tracks) – we want kids to start having fun with the instrument as quickly as possible. Your child will also learn how to read notes, understand guitar tablature, identify notes on the guitar strings, identify time signatures, and more! We want students to become complete musicians, not just guitar players.

Teaching Young Children How to Practice

Yes! In fact, that’s arguably the most important thing we do at Williamsburg Music Studio. Lesson materials are important, but we want your child to be able to improve on his or her own at home. We will assign practice materials each week, and as your child progresses, we will introduce practice strategies and concepts that will keep them moving forward even when a teacher is not available.

Our Guitar Lessons Help Achieve Your Goals

Learning guitar should feel personal. At Williamsburg Music Studio, we don’t follow a one-size-fits-all method. Instead, we listen to what you want to do with your playing, and then build lessons around that. Some students come in with the goal of writing their own songs. Others want to play lead guitar in a band, study classical repertoire, or just pick up a new skill for fun. Wherever you are, we’ll help you move forward.

Learn Acoustic, Chords, Country, Rock, Blues and More

We teach a wide variety of styles, especially for students learning on acoustic guitar. If you’re just getting started, you’ll work through the basics of open-position chords, strumming patterns, and songs by artists like Taylor Swift, The Beatles, or Johnny Cash. For students interested in blues and classic rock, we cover techniques like 12-bar patterns, pentatonic soloing, and riffs from players like B.B. King, Hendrix, and Clapton.

Fingerpicking styles are available too. For example, we teach Travis picking for country players, steady bass techniques in the style of Mississippi John Hurt, and nylon-string approaches used in folk and Latin music. If you want to study chord theory, drop-2 voicings, movable shapes, or barre chords, we’ll break those concepts down step-by-step so you can apply them to the music you care about.

You Don’t Need a Professional Guitar

You don’t need a fancy guitar to get started. Any acoustic or classical guitar in good condition will work. If you’re learning electric, we can teach you how to dial in your tone using the amp and gear you have. For kids just starting out, we also welcome Loog guitars and ukuleles. They’re great options for younger hands and help students focus on core skills like melody, rhythm, and basic fretting.

We’ll also walk you through how to care for your instrument, tune it correctly, and get comfortable switching between chords. If you ever want guidance on upgrading your gear, we’re happy to help with that too — but there’s no pressure to invest in high-end equipment right away.

Helping With Your Goals and Aspirations

Every student has different goals. If you’re aiming to join a band, we’ll focus on playing with others, reading lead sheets, learning covers, and building stage confidence. If you want to write songs, we’ll teach you common chord progressions, how to accompany yourself, and how to build melody ideas on guitar.

For classical players, we can help you study pieces made famous by Christopher Parkening, such as works by Sor, Carcassi, and Bach. Lessons focus on technique, tone, sight-reading, and phrasing, whether you’re preparing a formal recital or learning for personal enjoyment. We’ll guide you through arpeggios, tremolo studies, and right-hand independence so you can develop control and expression on a nylon-string guitar.

Whatever you want out of guitar, we’ll take it seriously. And we’ll show you exactly how to make progress in a way that makes sense.
